The comparative study of the two works distinguishes between the changes due to the film director's subjective reading of the novel and the changes made compulsory by the shift from one semiotic system to another. Some structural elements can easily, "directly" be transferred but they are sometimes erased or reorganised. Others are intimately linked to the novel's verbal system and must be rewritten into film language, composed of pictures, sounds and words (symbolism, points of view, figurative language).
